In the Super Mario games, there is a character going by the name of Birdo. Birdo is, basically, a girlish counterpart to Yoshi. Birdo is a pink dinosaur with a round mouth and a big bow. Birdo has appeared in multiple games throughout the years, and is often depicted as a girl. But is this really so? Despite the obvious appearance, there's plenty of evidence pointing to Birdo, as a matter of fact, being a male!
Super Mario Bros. 2[]
The Manuel's statement about Birdo being female.
Super Mario Bros 2 is the first game Birdo's featured in, depicted as one of the bosses in the game. In the game manuals of the older games, it states the following:
- He thinks she's a girl, and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called "Birdetta"
Judging from this statement in the actual manual, this depicts Birdo as a male, but, he is "sexually confused" and thinks she's a girl, thus explaining the girlish appearance and behavior.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]
While the game says Birdo is a female in the US version, in Japan, The game states in the information that Birdo could actually be Yoshi's girlfriend, again showing Birdo's confusion over it's own gender.
Super Smash Bros.[]
While Birdo doesn't appear as a playable character, Birdo does show as a trophy. What's confusing is that the game actually refers to Birdo as "it" instead of "he" or "she".
Captain Rainbow[]
In a non-mario game called Captain Rainbow, Birdo makes a cameo appearance in one of the missions. This is probably the best evidence of Birdo being all female like it appears to be. In the game, Birdo is thrown in jail for using a woman's public restroom when, as the robot officer claims, she's clearly a man! Birdo asks the player to go back to his house to prove she's a girl, and it eventually works.
